PPI claims more than double, says FOS

The Financial Ombudsman Service experienced 57 per cent more complaints regarding mis sold payment protection insurance between October and December 2011 than it did in the previous three months.

In Q4 2011, the FOS received 30,301 new cases about PPI. The figure represents nearly a third of all complaints received about payment protection insurance last year.

It is estimated that 6.5m payment protection insurance policies were sold to customers each year. In many cases, these policies were sold to customers who didn’t want, couldn’t use or even know about and it is this that has prompted the nationwide scandal.

To see if you have been mis sold PPI, you will need to contact your lender directly who will then evaluate your case. The lender can reject your claim with little, if any, explanation. Should this happen, or should they make you an offer which you believe is insubstantial, the onus is then on you to escalate the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
